Cabinotch damage

I emailed Matt at Cabinotch today about the damaged parts. He was very understanding and assured me that they would get the parts remade and sent out ASAP.

I still need to go over all the parts this weekend to make sure there is no other damage that won't be hidden

Permit

Sally called the county trying to find out if we needed a permit to have the stove electricity/gas supply moved.  After being forward to someone (she did not get a name), he told her that if we were hiring a professional to handle the work, they would be responsible for getting a permit.....We will have to see what the contractors we get to quote the work say about it.

Inspection

We opened up the pallets and checked out the cabinet parts.

I was surprised that all the parts were just in one big box all mixed up. There was no protection around any of them. They were free to bump and bounce around into each other. I have seen several videos that show the parts for a cabinet coming together wrapped up and protected.

So it looks like there is some damage to a couple parts.

It is hard to see in the images, but this is the worst problem.   The face frame is damaged deep enough that it can not be sanded out.  It is going to need to be replaced.

This the one side (bottom) of our tall pantry cabinet.  I think it has the most damage and looks the worst, but it might not effect us much since it will be covered by the refrigerator.

Here are a few other images of the damage to different parts.  I will have to give the sales rep a call in the morning to see what can be done about the worst damage.

Lumber delivered

Lumber came in from The Hardwood Store of N.C. today.   They were not kidding,  this is some really nice Alder.   22 -10 foot pieces with widths ranging from 6-8 inches.

It fit into the minivan perfectly. Thanks to the guys at work for helping unload it all.

The wood will have get acclimated to the house for a few weeks before I start working the wood.  That will give me time to planer sled built.

Cabinotch delivered

Delivery went pretty well.  Two packages arrived on a full size 18-wheeler.  They were able to get it unloaded and used a jack to move it into the garage.

I need Sheldon's duplicator

So i need to be in two place at the same time tomorrow....I guess I should not have crossed my fingers.

FedEx just called and the 755 lbs. Cabinotch order will be delivered at home between 11 and 3 tomorrow.

Old Diminion Freight will be delivering 355 lbs to work at about the same tomorrow.

Where is my wood?

Looks like the Alder from The Hardwood Store of N.C. did not ship on Monday as promised (Tuesday either).    We checked this morning and there has been no charge on the discover card yet either.

I called Cheryl this morning and she said the order was ready to go and will go out today.   Fingers crossed that we will get it tomorrow (Thursday).

I need a new Jig

Since I decided to build my own cabinet drawer boxes, I needed to come up with a way to make them....  I don't have a dovetail jig and with router bits it would run almost $200 for a good setup.   I decided to use box joint joinery for the drawer box sides.   The are strong and can be made simply and reliably using just a table saw and a dado blade along with a homemade jig.   I found plans for a nice jig and started putting it together.

9 solid Alder drawer boxes from Barker door would run $363 plus shipping.
4 @ 15x4x22
1 @ 12x4x22
1 @ 8x4x22
3 @ 19x2x24
The Alder costs for the drawers is estimated at $82.

Refrigerator relocation

So the biggest issue in moving the fridge was the water line.

First step was to remove to tile from where the fridge sits and add plywood so the floor was all at the same level.

Next I had to cut a hole in the drywall and add 2x4 framing for the replacement drywall.   We drilled a hole in the base plate and mounted a new ice box valve.

The plumbing took a little longer than it should have due to my inability to fully read directions, but I got it finished and there are no leaks....anymore.

Here is the fridge temporarily in its new home.

Desk area removed

So Sally calls this the start day of the remodel.   First stage is to remove the desk and wall cabinets.   Shouldn't be too hard....right....

The base cabinet was really stuck in there since the old tile was grouted right up against the toe kick.     Nothing a little sledge and pry-bar can't "fix".   My helper made sure I didn't miss anything.

We replaced our garage recycle center with the base cabinet desk.  After much arguing/discussion we then then put the wall cabinets over the torsion box workbench at the back of the garage.

The Hardwood Store of N.C.

After lots of searching and research, I found The Hardwood Store of N.C. that had a good stock of Alder.   The drawback is that shipping has a $112 minimum freight charge.   I have decided to build the drawer boxes myself instead or ordering online to increase the board footage that I need.   I also will need wood  for the island that is coming after cabinets.
I also found out that  The Hardwood Store also had just the right Alder crown molding that we will need for the cabinets.  This will save me from having to try to route my own.

So I placed an email ordered for 100  board feet (RGH) of Superior Red Alder @$3.25 per bd. ft. and 25 ft of 3inch crown molding.

With the shipping the Alder works out to about $4.50/bd. ft. which is the same price I would have gotten at the lumber yard, plus I have the molding now.     Should ship Monday I hope!

Alder...Alder...anyone Alder...

The Lumberyard (Maudlin Road) has only a couple Alder boards!  Not good.   Even worse, with only needing 50-60 board feet, it is not enough for them to order any for me.    We are going to have to look for other options...

Shaker with applied molding

I really like the clean simple lines of the shaker doors but I wanted to "make then mine" so to speak.  So I decided on two different design changes I was going to make on our doors and drawer fronts.

1) Add a beaded a molding to the inside edge of the frame like this door I found at WalzCraft. The wood and color are not what we want, but the look is.  The router bit is a Freud 80-122 with a 1/8in radius. The router bit was $23 from amazon.

2) Use a bridal joint on the shaker frames. I really like to look of this type of mortise and tenon joint and it can built using only a table saw (and jig).

A 14x24 Alder shaker door from BarkerDoor without the design changes is $36.90.  Wood for same size door is estimated to cost $11.70.   Design changes could easily add $5-10 per door.

Alder it is!

After much trial and testing wood samples, we have decided on Red Alder for our new kitchen cabinets.

Our old cabinets are maple and we wanted something different.  We tried 4 or 5 different stains on both Cherry and Alder.

A soft, relatively low-strength, straight-grained, even-textured wood. Works well with hand and machine tools, but sharp cutting edges need to be maintained to prevent tearing the grain. The wood is rarely wider than 6 due to the small size of the trees. A relatively small tree, reaching about 50ft in height and producing a trunk in diameter up to 15''. The tree grows in Pacific Coast of North America.

Alder also does not darken over time as much as other wood species.
